Bed Rails

Installing bed rails at your bed side can greatly improve the safety of transfers from in and out of your bed. Bed rails are not a new idea but they have constantly been improved on over the many years since their inception.

The first bed rails were probably custom made instead of produced from a factory. Today we have bed rails that provide more support than older models. Newer models have movable rails, and some even have a cane attachment. These new features all add to the mobility and safety in and around your bed.

Bed rails for the elderly is what our main focus is on today. Falls and fall related injury's are a real threat to the elderly population. Sources estimate well over ten million seniors fall each year. Many of those that fall have to spend the rest of their lives with limited mobility, and will need cared for boy a health professional.

You can do something about this so that you or your loved one has a much less risk of falling when getting in and out of the bed. A device that will help you get out of your bed and into your wheelchair, or just to simply help you to stand up can be the difference from you falling or not. Bed rails may be the solution you have been searching for.

Another great thing about bed rails is the cost. Bed rails cost considerably less than other assisted devices, such as a trapeze or similar system. So even if you do not have some kind of health insurance plan it will not cost you an arm and a leg should you make the decision bed rails are right for you. Most bed rails cost around two hundred dollars, some are even around only one hundred dollars.

You should be aware of the dangers of buying cheap bed rails as they can often times lead to injury's, the same kind of fall injury's bed rails are supposed to help prevent. Make sure the company you plan to buy from has a good reputation of quality products. Inferior products also won't last long and end up having to be replaced quickly and frequently.

Whatever decision you make be sure to carefully consider your options before making a final choice. A quality made bed rail should, in most cases, last for many years. Also be sure that the company you plan to buy from uses real metal on their bed rails, the last thing you want are bed rails that won't support you. Plastic bed rails should definitely be avoided if you plan on using your bed rails to get up and down on.

One more thing to make sure of is that the bed rails you are going to buy can support your body weight. Most online companies offering mobility devices, as well as department stores, will list the maximum weight the product can handle. If you can't find the maximum weight supported be sure to call the manufacturer so you can avoid injury in the future.

As we grow older we need help with transfers, bed rails could very well be your answer to transferring safer and having more confidence getting in and out of your bed.
